A quick recap of the weekend, had scheduled maintenance at work which I got to the office at 5:30a Saturday to start until after 3p, which wouldn’t have been so bad if I hadn’t stayed up late the previous night preparing archive manager attachment store for migration. Any how, got home and had planned to go biking, but ended up falling asleep. I woke up later that night and didn’t want to sleep so I stayed up watching tv until nearly 5a.

Sunday I woke up around 11:30a and had lucky dill roast beef sandwich, and pretty much did next to nothing, still tired. I did wake to find a not so nice set of emails from my server at home. Apparently early Sunday morning the mvsas driver crapped out for the raid controller and ejected two drives from the raid but the odd part was the raid wasn’t marked inactive, instead most everything showed up but a lot of data wasn’t accessible.

After some research, sda and sdf were marked failed, tried to run smart tests on both but sda wouldn’t show anything and sdf failed several times to complete. In the end working with a friend he suggested the raid driver had an issue and to try rebooting the system, which amazingly worked, devices showed up but the raid was offline.

After some quick tests and reassembling the raid, everything appeared to be back up and clean, however I’ve been waiting a good 5 hours for the file system check and smart test to complete before I remount the file system.

Ultimately I have almost everything on that system syncd to another system and available for redundancy but I’d hate to have to copy it all back and redownload the stuff I don’t have backed up.

Oh, and I went to go biking today and it started raining… Thanks a lot weather.com….

I could give examples but I don’t want to single out certain demographics, but just to say that it’s ridiculous the amount of crap people get away with and expect everyone to put up with in today’s society. Maybe there is a such thing as too much freedom?

Today I got the PDF version of my Linux+ certificate. Despite having to take the newer Linux+ exam after I’d originally planned on taking the old one, it was rather simple. I’m looking forward to completing my other certifications which I’ve been working on for a while and have a large list that I’d like to complete. Right now I have the following:

A+

Network+

Linux+ / LPIC-1 / Novell Linux Administrator

Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator 2003

I only have one Design exam left to complete my Microsoft Systems Engineer 2003. I plan to complete the last exam within the next month or two, depending on whether I decide to do the Security+ exam. After that, I think I’ll work on my 2008 Microsoft exams and then Cisco.

Update (11/05/2011):
I did finally get my MCSE 2003 earlier this year, might post about it later, been extremely busy with work and school last few months.

Ok, I love the features 4.2 adds, however, I think Apple needs to consider changing their update process. For some awful reason it’s downloading extremely slow, says around 1-2 hours to finish downloading. Now, when I went through the update on my iPad, it downloaded in around 5-10 minutes and then took nearly an hour to backup the iPad before it could start the update. A little background, I have 35Mbps Internet, and everything else downloads fine, and I am using a USB 2.0 compatible system.

What would be really nice is if during that download process if they would go ahead and do the iPhone or iPad backup so as soon as the download is done it can start the update process. Obviously this might not work for every situation, such as when people are using the device while the file is downloading, but with a little conditional logic, they should be able to handle this.

Just my thoughts Looking forward to 4.2 on my iPhone since I updated my iPad when it was released in November.

For years I’ve played games such as Command and Conquer and Supreme Commander (1 & 2) and usually very much enjoy it except when you have large games and the gaming engine can’t handle it and then crashes. The point of this post however is to get out my frustration with the latest updates to Supreme Commander 2.

When I first bought Supreme Commander 2, I loved it, with the exception of not being able to build custom maps, or a large variety of maps, but never the less, I really enjoyed playing it with my friends. A few months back they released an update to the game which changed two things which I’ll list below.

When building structures, you used to have to wait until you had the resources available to build or queue up units. Now, you can queue up structures and other units and they won’t build until you have resources. This I’m sorta ok with, it’s taken me a while to get used to it, but I can live with it.

They’ve changed the computer opponent levels. Before, you used to be able to pick for example, Normal with Turtle, Normal with Balanced, Hard – Balanced, etc. You can technically still do this, but the opponents aren’t as actually balanced as they used to be, regardless of which one you use, specifically with aerial.

Number 2 above is the one that really pisses me off. Now, I get completely flooded with aerial and the only option I can think of is to disable aerial, but that isn’t the best solution.

I wish they’d change it back the way it was, the game was more fun. Instead of screwing up things, why don’t they develop more maps and stop tweaking the game so much! I will give them a compliment though, I was really happy when they added the option to disable long range artillery because some of my friends would build crap loads of long range and eventually it just becomes so much it goes right through any shields and kills your opponents.

I have looked all over for a way to do FaceTime on my iPhone when a WiFi connection isn’t available or breaking out a laptop and setting up a WiFi connection using a broadband card, but the only way I found was to jailbreak the phone, which I’d rather not do that due to the fact that almost everytime a new update comes out, you have to do it all over again, re-install all your apps, and it’s just a big pain.

My solution is to purchase the Novatel Wireless MiFi 2372 and use that to connect using FaceTime from my phone. FaceTime is not my only reason for the MiFi, it is also great if you have the WiFi only version of the iPad and again, do not want to jailbreak your iPhone to use as a wireless router, you can use the MiFi to connect all of them as well as laptop without having to use the iPhone tethering.

Hopefully this is helpful to someone else as well.
